Any Other Day

It was a day like any other day, except that it was the day that I found out about you.

You, who never looked at me twice. You, who never gave me the time of day. You, who I’ve loved since grade school, and you, who I was always afraid to actually meet.

Today, I wasn’t the only one thinking about you. You were on everyone’s mind, and your name was on everyone’s lips. I didn’t hear a single bad thing about you. To judge from what everyone was saying today, you were the salt of the earth.

Joe, who never had a nice thing to say about you, kept his mouth shut. Erin, who always hated you because I didn’t, didn’t mention you at all.

From what I heard, the car was in pretty bad shape. After two rolls and a minor explosion, there wasn’t a whole lot left to be in any shape at all. The guy driving the semi was devastated. So was the guy driving the car, in an entirely different way.

We had a moment of silence for you today, and I guess it still hasn’t ended for me. We had a whole lifetime of silence between the two of us, and I still have a whole lifetime left.
